Box Score CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Roosevelt University baseball team rallied, but could not overcome an early deficit against St. Ambrose University on Friday, April 15. With the loss, the Lakers are now 9-9 in conference play and 15-19 overall this season.
The game got off to a quick start for St. Ambrose, who started the game with two runs after just four batters. However, Noah Mathias found his groove on the mound for the Lakers after the shaky start, striking out the final two batters of the inning. The Lakers ace was steady for the rest of his outing, allowing two additional runs and striking out eight in 8 1/3 innings.
The Lakers finally got on the board in the bottom of the third. After Jesus Gomez walked and advanced to second on a fielder's choice, Nick McAlister singled up the middle, allowing Gomez to score and cutting the deficit to 2-1.
With the game now 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Lakers once again found the offensive spark. With one out in the inning, Trevor Heinlein ripped a double into the left field corner that scored Jonathan Salm, who had walked earlier in the inning. The Lakers were unable to advance Heinlein and the score remained 3-2 going into the eighth. The Bees were able to tally an insurance run in the ninth and the Lakers comeback fell short for a 4-2 final score.
