JOLIET, Ill. – The seventh-seeded Roosevelt University baseball team opened up play in the double-elimination CCAC Conference Tournament with a 4-3 loss to second-seeded Saint Ambrose University on Friday, May 7 at DuPage Medical Group Field. The Lakers will now face third-seeded Judson University at 10am on Saturday, May 8.
The Lakers allowed two runs in both the first and second innings to the Fighting Bees, which ended up being the difference in the game. After the first two innings, RU starting pitcher Jordan Mikolajewski (SR/Plainfield, Ill.) threw seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters.
Roosevelt scored its first run in the fourth inning when Andrew Olszewski (JR/Beecher, Ill.) crossed the plate on an error after being hit by a pitch to reach base. The Lakers made it a ballgame with two runs in the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-3. Tyler Suchy (JR/Oak Forest, Ill.) doubled to lead off the inning, Joshua Stivers (JR/Long Grove, Iowa) singled, and Kerry Zeese (SO/Granger, Ind.) walked to load the bases. Suchy scored on an Andrew Rodriguez (SR/Oak Forest, Ill.)' fielder's choice and Chris Broccolino (SR/Schaumburg, Ill.) drove in Stivers on a sacrifice fly.
The Lakers threatened in the ninth with Suchy leading off the inning with a base hit and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Stivers. Suchy then advanced to third with two outs, but he was stranded 90 feet from home to end the game.
