Baseball Rallies In Nightcap To Force Extras But Drops Doubleheader To St. Ambrose

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Freshman Kerry Zeese hit a game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings in Sunday's nightcap between Roosevelt and St. Ambrose, but the visiting Bees scored three runs in the top of the 12th to take a 9-6 decision and complete a twinbill sweep at Ozinga Field.

The Lakers (4-19, 4-8 CCAC) were shut out by St. Ambrose (6-14, 4-4 CCAC) and pitcher Tyler Bromer, who went the distance in the opener of the day and came away with an 8-0 decision.

Lou Reynolds had five hits in nine at-bats and drove in two runs amidst the two games.

Roosevelt rallied back from two three-run deficits in the finale, including a two-run comeback in the ninth on Zeese's big hit that nearly became a walk-off win for the Lakers. But that near-walk-off opportunity came up just short as Jordan Coakley was thrown out at home during the Zeese play to keep the game going.

After two innings of scoreless play, the Bees greeted new pitcher Jordan Mikolajewski harshly and scored three runs off the reliever.

The Lakers would not give up easily in the bottom of the 12th, putting two runners on base with two away for cleanup hitter Zach Taylor, who stepped to the plate representing the tying run. But Ryan Andrews induced a game-ending groundout to end the threat.

Starter Noah Mathias had a quality start, recovering from early trouble to go seven innings and give up just three earned runs. The rookie fanned seven SAU hitters.

Roosevelt churned out seven hits against Bromer in game one, but the Lakers stranded nine runners on base and produced no runs.

Roosevelt renews its rivalry with Robert Morris at Ozinga Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
