ROSEMONT, Ill. - Despite struggles in its previous 11 innings of play against Olivet Nazarene on Tuesday evening, the Roosevelt softball team battled until the very end of its doubleheader loss against the Tigers at The Ballpark at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.
After falling 10-2 in five innings to ONU ace Emily Carstens and the Tigers in the opener, the Lakers were blanked by Miranda Southall for six frames in the nightcap before staging a furious rally in the seventh and bringing the tying run on deck until the comeback ran out of gas in a 7-4 loss that displayed guts by the home team in its final turn at bat.
Camryn Williams drove in two runs on a big single in the boisterous seventh and even pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief to set the stage for the late fireworks by the Lakers (6-17, 0-4 CCAC).
Haley Huss had two hits in game two and an RBI, and Amber Green also drove in a run during the seventh.
Southhall gave up five hits to the Lakers in the seventh after scattering four in the previous six innings, but she was able to end the threat and the game on consecutive groundouts.
Williams also had a hit and a run scored in the opener, but the Tigers (17-7, 4-0 CCAC) jumped out to a big early lead due to a six-run second inning.
Carstens did the rest, scattering four hits and allowing two runs in a fourth inning aided by an error.
Roosevelt looks to pick up its first CCAC win with a makeup doubleheader at Cardinal Stritch in Milwaukee this Thursday afternoon.
