CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Behind a 27-hit afternoon, the Roosevelt baseball team snapped its season-opening skid and swept a doubleheader over visiting Calumet St. Joseph at Ozinga Field on Saturday.
Matt Garbacz tossed a complete game while the Lakers scored five runs in each of the first two innings to cruise to a 12-4 twinbill-opening win.
The Lakers struck early again and posted back-to-back three-spots in the third and fourth to close the day with a 9-4 victory.
A young Roosevelt squad with 16 new faces ended a 16-game winless start to the season with its first W since last May's CCAC Tournament and started a new streak with a second straight victorious decision on Saturday.
The Lakers improved to 2-5 in the early CCAC standings.
Matt Kozlak had three hits in game one to go with three runs. He finished with five runs scored on the day and five stolen bases, and he drove in three runs in game two.
Parker Coleman drove in five runs on the afternoon, while Jordan Coakley had four RBI.
Thanks to Roosevelt's early offensive fireworks and Garbacz's seven innings of just three earned runs allowed, the Lakers left no doubt in the opener.
Game two was much closer as CCSJ (6-16, 0-5 CCAC) churned out 10 hits and would threaten throughout the game, but pitchers Jordan Mikolajewski and Matt Donahue combined to strand 10 Crimson Wave runners and limit the damage.
Anthony Nicholas pitched the last two innings in perfect fashion, fanning four.
The two teams are slated to finish the series with a single game in Whiting on Sunday afternoon.
