CRESTWOOD, Ill. - Despite a quality start from Matt Garbacz and a go-ahead two-run sixth inning by the Lakers' offense, visiting Saint Xavier scored three runs in the eighth and added another in the ninth to rally past the Roosevelt baseball team, 7-4, at Ozinga Field on Saturday.
Garbacz went seven innings and allowed three runs, just one being earned, and fanned seven Cougars in a strong effort for the Lakers (0-13, 0-2 CCAC).
Matt Kozlak and Dom Lentini had two hits each, and Lentini drove in a go-ahead run in the sixth on a single right after Jordan Coakley's game-tying RBI double.
Saint Xavier (9-8, 1-0 CCAC) greeted reliever Nick Simak with a three-run, five-hit eighth inning, erasing the Lakers' lead and summoning Matt Donahue from the bullpen to limit the damage.
Roosevelt loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but reliever Joe Strem escaped unscathed and SXU scored another run in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
The two teams resume their three-game weekend series with a doubleheader at Ozinga Field on Sunday at 1 p.m.
