CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Roosevelt baseball team couldn't generate much offense in falling to Saint Xavier in a pair of games at Ozinga Field on Sunday.
The Lakers (0-15, 0-4 CCAC) fell 10-1 in the opener before Saint Xavier (11-8, 3-0 CCAC) broke a 1-1 tie by scoring on a fielding error in the bottom of the eighth to win a 2-1 nailbiter and complete the series sweep.
Noah Mathias tossed seven innings of one-run ball in the finale to get a no-decision.
Roosevelt rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the fifth inning of the nightcap thanks to Dom Lentini's game-tying RBI single.
With two runners on and one out in the eighth, SXU was able to break the deadlock on a ground ball hit by Agustin Guerrero that was misplayed at second and allowed the go-ahead run to score.
The Lakers put the tying run aboard in the ninth, but Gage Olszak escaped with a game-ending groundout for the save.
The Lakers couldn't muster much against SXU game one starter Tim Brokop, who went the distance and allowed just three hits and a single run, which came in the second inning on Connor Graefen's two-out RBI single.
But SXU scored 10 unanswered runs in the opener to take the victory.
Graefen and Lentini had 2-for-3 games during the doubleheader.
Roosevelt takes on Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais on Tuesday.
