ORLANDO, Fla. -- With newfound confidence, the Roosevelt women's tennis team won its second straight match by shutout, beating NCAA Division II opponent Minnesota-Crookston 9-0 Sunday at the USTA National Campus. It was the start of a four-match week over spring break in Florida.
Roosevelt's women moved to 5-3, just one win from tying the program's record for victories in a season.
"There are just so many things that can happen the first time you play outdoors for the season,'' Roosevelt coach Greg Couch said. "The entire game feels different and the ball even travels through the air differently.
"Honestly, that Crookston program is just looking to get off the ground, kind of like we were last year. It would have been disappointing if that had been a close match. But what's great is seeing our women out there fully expecting to win. We have a lot more talent than we've had here, but we're also going to win matches on attitude alone.''
The only tight matches were at No. 6 singles, where Meryem Ahmed fell behind early, fought to a first-set win and then took off from there. And at No. 2, Kyla Eaton won the first set, but then trailed 4-1 in the second. She came charging back to win the last five games.
"Kyla wasn't overly happy with herself,'' Couch said, "But it really takes guts to come back the way she did in that second set. But now, we're going to have three really tough, probably close matches in a row. We're going to have to play well to win any of them. It's going to be fun.''
