MILWAUKEE, Wis. – For the fourth time in five matches, the Roosevelt volleyball team engaged in a five-set conference affair, and the Lakers almost completed a dramatic comeback from six points down in the final stanza in a narrow 25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-12 road loss to Cardinal Stritch on Panella Court on Tuesday night.
Makenzie Cooper had a double-double of 14 kills and 14 digs, while Kara Sleeper added 13 kills and six block assists and Amy Stumpf had 11 kills and 15 digs for the Lakers (8-16, 3-9 CCAC).
Mallory Nickelson had 40 assists and 10 digs, and Daphyne Tuner had seven block assists.
Kaylee Lorincz led all players with 21 kills while Sydney Niehaus had 20 kills for the Wolves (7-16, 6-7 CCAC).
The Lakers rebounded from a first-set loss to take the second frame, and the two teams traded the next two sets as Roosevelt forced a fifth set with a fourth-frame decision. The third set represented the closely-contested nature of the entire match as the teams needed extra time to decide a winner, and the Wolves took a narrow 26-24 win.
Stritch went up 11-5 and 14-8 in the final stanza before Roosevelt roared back and made it a match, getting it to 14-12 on a Cooper kill. But Niehaus reciprocated with a kill for match point that ended a valiant Roosevelt road run.
The Lakers host Calumet St. Joseph on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Goodman Center. The match is Roosevelt's Dig Pink match in support of breast cancer awareness and research.
