Roosevelt Outlasts Northern Michigan For GLIAC Win

CHICAGO – Braelyn Marshall-Northington led the way with 15 kills as Roosevelt toppled Northern Michigan in four sets Saturday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at the Goodman Center.

After a rough outing in Tuesday's conference opener, the Lakers (4-5, 1-1 GLIAC) showed no lingering effects Saturday. Throughout all four sets, Roosevelt showed plenty of resilience with there being 35 total ties and 18 lead changes in the sets.

It started from the opening serve as Roosevelt charged back from a 15-10 deficit in the first set to claim the first game 25-23. Alessia Isgro had three kills and two aces in the first set, the second of which tied the set at 19. After the Wildcats tied the set at 23, Roosevelt took a timeout and proceeded to force an attack error before Marshall ended the set with a kill.

Once again, a timeout flipped the momentum in the second set as the Lakers used the break to rebound from a 23-20 deficit. Imani Lee rose up for one of her then Isgro followed with a solo block. Lee then served up two straight aces to give the Lakers their first set point. Roosevelt finished off its second chance at set point for a 26-24 win.

Northern Michigan won the third set 25-20, but the fourth set returned to the back-and-forth nature of the match. Neither team led by more than three in what proved to be the final set before Marshall and Isgro ended the match with consecutive kills for a 27-25 win. Marshall had six kills in the fourth set and Isgro had five of her 11 kills in the fourth as well.

Lee ended with three aces and 12 digs while Madison Howard finished with 11 digs as well. Abigail Wutka had a pair of solo blocks while Isa Grana led the team with 21 assists.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt continues its homestand Friday at 6 p.m. when Grand Valley State visits the Goodman Center.
