Baseball Opens First CCAC Tournament With 6-1 Loss To Saint Xavier

ELGIN, Ill. – The Roosevelt baseball team opened its debut appearance in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Baseball Tournament on Friday, trailing Saint Xavier by just a run after six and a half innings before the Cougars posted back-to-back two-run innings to evade the Lakers, 6-1, at Judson's Hoffer Field.

The fourth-seeded Lakers (25-23) will play an elimination game against the losing team from Friday's Judson-St. Ambrose contest on Saturday, May 5 at 1:30 p.m. at Hoffer Field.

The Cougars (24-27), the tournament's fifth seed, opened the scoring in the first by plating an unearned run against starter Matt Dunne.

SXU added a run on an RBI double in the fourth to take a two-run lead.

Roosevelt got on the board in the seventh. Charley Zeschke led off with a single and eventually moved all the way to third to set up Zach Taylor's RBI single that cut the Lakers' deficit in half.

Saint Xavier responded with two in the bottom half of the inning, as an error put two in scoring position for Matt Monahan's two-run double.

Dunne exited after that, allowing just one earned run and seven hits.

Cameron Powell hit a two-run homer off of reliever Jalan Williams in the eighth to make it a 6-1 game.

Roosevelt would not go down quietly, loading the bases in the top of the ninth but failing to score a run.

Zeschke and Leo Lunatto had two hits apiece.
