PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Roosevelt softball team churned out 31 hits and 21 runs to split a road doubleheader at Trinity Christian on Saturday.
The Lakers (8-23, 3-6 CCAC) won the opener in no-doubt fashion 11-2 before rallying back from six runs down and going back-and-forth with the Trolls (8-13, 2-6 CCAC) in wild extra-inning affair that narrowly went to TCC by a final of 11-10 in 11 innings.
Caitlyn Santiago hit her first collegiate home run, while Amber Green and Aisley Njissang drove in five runs each. Green has eight RBI in her last three games.
Green and Haley Huss delivered five hits apiece.
Roosevelt held a 3-1 lead in the opener before breaking things open with a five-run fourth and a three-run fifth.
Njissang allowed just one run in the circle for the win.
In the finale, the Trolls jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. The Lakers got within one after five runs in the fourth and fifth frames, and Roosevelt took its first lead of the game with a two-run sixth on run-scoring plays off the bats of Kelli Jones and Huss.
Trinity Christian tied the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh, sending it to extras. Both teams traded a run in the ninth, and in the 11th it appeared the Lakers might have the answer to end the game when Lee led off with a single and Santiago went yard for a two-run lead.
But the Trolls tied the game on a two-run double in the bottom half of the 11th, and after an error put the winning run at third, a sacrifice fly allowed the Trolls to walk off with the win in a wild game.
Roosevelt heads back to Rosemont for a morning non-conference doubleheader against Cincinnati Christian at The Dome at Rosemont beginning at 8 a.m.
