Baseball Takes Twinbill, Series From St. Ambrose

Box Score

CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Roosevelt baseball team walked off with a dramatic 6-5 win to cap off a doubleheader sweep of visiting St. Ambrose at Standard Bank Stadium on Saturday.

The Lakers (14-15, 10-4 CCAC) scored six unanswered runs to defeat the Fighting Bees (9-19, 6-6 CCAC) 6-1 in the opener behind a complete-game effort from Matt Dunne, who struck out eight SAU hitters and allowed a single run in the first.

Charley Zeschke had two hits, a feat he replicated in the finale, and Leo Lunatto had two RBI in the first contest, both of which were registered in the bottom of the first to account for the tying and go-ahead runs.

Roosevelt added a three-spot in the fourth and another run in the fifth, which were more than enough for Dunne's dominance after the opening frame.

In the nightcap, the two sides went back and forth until the Lakers scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth when Lunatto attempted to move Zeschke into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt but actually got Zeschke home from first when the ball off his bunt was fielded and subsequently thrown away by the pitcher for a walk-off run-scoring error and a 6-5 decision for the Green and White.

Pierce Albright earned the win in relief with two innings of work.

The wins gave Roosevelt the 2-1 series win over SAU.

The Lakers are back in action on April 4 with a road contest against Robert Morris Illinois.
