Box Score DAVENPORT, Iowa – Matt Garbacz continued to shine with another quality start and just two earned runs allowed, but St. Ambrose scored an unearned go-ahead run in the fourth to edge the Roosevelt baseball team, 3-2, in the series opener between the two teams at Modern Woodmen Park on Friday.
Matt Marrera and Tyler Ward drove in runs for the Lakers (12-15, 8-4 CCAC).
Garbacz threw eight innings for the second straight outing, scattering nine hits and walking just one batter while fanning three. The sophomore ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth when, with Roosevelt up 2-0, the Fighting Bees (9-17, 6-4 CCAC) scored their first run on a sac fly and then the tying run on a two-out RBI single before a fielding error allowed the inning to continue.
That allowed Josh Hlubek to step to the plate and deliver a go-ahead RBI single to make it a 3-2 game.
The offense stopped for both teams after the fourth, though Roosevelt had the tying run in scoring position in the top of the ninth when Jalan Williams led off with a single and got to second on Marrera's sac bunt. But reliever Trevor Hatcher induced two outs out of the next two hitters to close the door on the Lakers' comeback.
The series continues on Saturday at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood with doubleheader action starting at 1 p.m.
