Garbacz's Three-Hit Shutout, Albright's Relief Lift Baseball To Twinbill Sweep Of Saint Xavier

CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Matt Garbacz pitched a complete-game shutout and Pierce Albright tossed four-plus innings of scoreless relief in back-to-back starring pitching roles, propelling the Roosevelt baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Saint Xavier at Standard Bank Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The Lakers (8-12, 4-1 CCAC) won the opener despite just two hits against Saint Xavier (8-16, 3-2 CCAC) and starter Tyler Hebel, as Parker Coleman's RBI groundout in the fourth proved to be the only offense that Garbacz needed in his sterling showing in a 1-0 win.

Garbacz, a sophomore right-hander, allowed just three hits and a walk while fanning six Cougars to go the distance.

In the finale, Roosevelt took an early 4-0 lead before Saint Xavier tied the game with a three-run fifth inning, but the Lakers broke the tie with a two-run seventh on Charley Zeschke's go-head sacrifice fly and Coleman's run-scoring single for insurance to give the Lakers a 6-4 win, a twinbill sweep and a 2-1 series win.

Rookie Nick Simak was strong early, fanning five, before the three-run fifth sent him to the dugout with a no-decision.

Albright stepped in and ended the Cougars' threat in that frame, and the junior college transfer kept the Cougars off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

That superb scoreless relief by Albright allowed the Lakers to take charge in the seventh and pick up the win.

Tyler Ward went 3-for-4 in the finale and scored a total of three runs on the afternoon, including the winning tally in game one.

Roosevelt is back at Standard Bank Stadium on Wednesday to take on Olivet Nazarene at 3:30 p.m.
