Box Score CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Roosevelt baseball team dropped a pair of close contests to visiting St. Ambrose at Standard Bank Stadium on Saturday.
The Lakers (9-25, 5-16 CCAC) were shut out 3-0 in the opener, and despite the offense awakening for the Green and White in the second contest, Roosevelt was edged by the Bees (18-23, 14-7 CCAC) by a final of 6-5 in the nightcap.
Tyler Ward had four hits between the two games, while Logan Fleener went 3-for-5 in the finale and Colten Trager drove in two runs.
The Lakers committed five errors during the two games, leading to five unearned runs crossing the dish.
Despite a quality complete-game performance by senior Jared Jayne, who tossed seven innings and allowed just one earned run, the Lakers were confounded by St. Ambrose's Jake Sheley. The SAU starter allowed just four hits and retired the final 11 hitters in order to pick up the shutout.
Roosevelt churned out a game-high 13 hits, and despite tying the game in the third and taking a two-run lead in the fourth, the Lakers fell behind due to St. Ambrose scoring three times in the fifth and tacking on what proved to be the decisive tally in the sixth on a squeeze bunt.
The Lakers plated a run in the seventh on an RBI triple by Trager to get within a run, and the Lakers put two runners on in the eighth before seeing that pair stranded.
Cooper Sant Amour relieved started Jake McCabe and closed the door on Roosevelt's comeback attempt in the ninth by retiring the side.
The Lakers conclude their weekend series against St. Ambrose with Sunday night baseball in Davenport, Iowa tomorrow at 6 p.m.
