Garbacz Shines, But Baseball Falls Twice To Judson

CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Despite scoring five runs after three innings in the opening game and getting a complete-game gem from rookie right-hander Matt Garbacz in the nightcap, the Roosevelt baseball team dropped its Saturday doubleheader and weekend series against CCAC-leading Judson.

Roosevelt (6-14, 2-5 CCAC) fell 12-6 in Saturday's first game at Standard Bank Stadium after Judson (21-10. 7-0 CCAC) broke a 5-5 tie with five more runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Despite Garbacz allowing just three runs and scattering seven hits in his gritty nine-inning outing, the Lakers mustered just a third-inning run on an RBI single hit by Charley Zeschke to support their freshman starter as the Eagles scored three unanswered to take a 3-1 decision.

Zeschke drove in three runs during the doubleheader, and Matt Kozlak turned in a pair of two-hit showings.

After Judson went up a run in the second inning of the twinbill lid-lifter, Roosevelt scored three times in the bottom half of the second thanks to RBI plays off the bats of Parker Coleman, Jonah Meidl-Zahorodny and Kozlak.

The Eagles roared back with a four-run third, but the Lakers continued to keep pace with Colten Trager and Zeschke driving in runs during the bottom half of that same frame to bring back a deadlock.

But Judson scored three times in the next half-inning and tacked on a pair of two-run innings, while Roosevelt scored just once more.

Garbacz did his best to stunt the offensive fireworks from game one with his pitching performan ce, keeping the Lakers in the game the whole way.

Unfortunately Roosevelt's offense couldn't pick up its rookie hurler, as the Lakers stranded 14 runners on base.

Roosevelt renews its season series against St. Francis (Ill.), with a CCAC doubleheader in Joliet on April 4 beginning at 1 p.m.
