CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Roosevelt baseball team engaged in two close contests with Purdue Northwest at Standard Bank Stadium on Wednesday, and the visiting Pride escaped with a pair of wins over the Lakers.
Roosevelt (8-19, 4-10 CCAC) fell 3-0 in the opener before seeing Purdue Northwest (16-13, 9-5 CCAC) hold on for a 4-2 decision in the nightcap.
Logan Fleener had three hits on the day and drove in one of the Lakers' runs. Andrew Bohlmann legged out an RBI triple, and Matt Kozlak had a two-hit game in the opener.
The starting pitchers for the Lakers did their part, as veterans Matt Dunne and Mike Marrera posted back-to-back quality starts.
Senior Jared Jayne returned from an early-season injury and pitched 1.1 innings in relief.
The Lakers couldn't get much going against Purdue Northwest starter Matt Sandoval, as the Pride pitcher tossed a complete-game shutout by scattering five hits and fanning that same amount to keep Roosevelt off the scoreboard and allow three early PNW runs to stand up.
Roosevelt took an early lead in game two on Bohlmann's second-inning three-bagger, but Purdue Northwest tied the game up in the next half-inning and took the lead in the fourth on a two-out RBI single.
A fifth-inning RBI groundout gave the Pride a two-run lead, but the Lakers responded in the sixth on an RBI single hit by Fleener to get the Green and White within a run.
Roosevelt had two runners in scoring position in that same frame but couldn't cash in, and the Lakers stranded another pair in the eighth.
Purdue Northwest turned a leadoff triple against Jayne into a run after a sacrifice fly, and Brody Kutch retired the side in the ninth on three consecutive groundball outs to close the door on a Roosevelt rally.
The Lakers start a three-game series against Robert Morris Illinois with the opening contest this Friday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. inside Standard Bank Stadium.
