HAMMOND, Ind. – Jonah Meidl-Zahorodny hit three home runs, including a two-homer, seven-RBI performance in game two, during the Roosevelt baseball team's convincing doubleheader sweep of Calumet St. Joseph to open CCAC play at Oil City Stadium on Friday.
Roosevelt (6-8, 2-0 CCAC) won the opener by a final of 16-2 before taking the nightcap, 12-5.
Meidl-Zahorodny had quite the day at the dish. He went 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs driven in and two runs scored to start the day. In the finale, the junior college transfer went 4-for-5 with two more runs scored and a whopping seven runs batted in.
Meidl-Zahorodny hit a two-run roundtripper in the Lakers' overwhelming 11-run fourth inning in the first contest against the Crimson Wave (3-21-1, 0-2 CCAC), and he helped break things open in the second affair when, with the Lakers trailing 2-1 entering the sixth, he followed Colten Trager's game-tying leadoff homer and Andrew Bohlmann's go-ahead RBI double with a three-run bomb.
He helped the Lakers keep their foot on the gas pedal with a two-run drive during a four-run ninth.
Trager was no slouch on Friday, either, as the senior went yard in each of the day's games and drove in a combined five runs.
Matt Dunne went the distance for the win in game one, as the veteran allowed just one earned run.
Rookie Matt Garbacz garnered the victory in the finale with 6.2 innings of strong four-run work.
