Softball Opens CCAC Slate, Falls At Judson

ELGIN, Ill. – The Roosevelt softball team opened CCAC play with a pair of road games at Judson on Tuesday, falling 7-2 in the opener before dropping a tough 3-2 walk-off decision to the Eagles to close the day.

Taylor Sterkowitz drove in three runs, including two on a game-tying fifth-inning double in the nightcap, during a three-hit afternoon.

The Lakers (7-9, 0-2 CCAC) saw the Eagles (17-6, 2-0 CCAC) take a quick 3-0 lead after two innings in the opener before Roosevelt responded in the third with runs driven in by Sterkowitz and fellow freshman Maddy Janssen.

Unfortunately Judson tacked on two more in its half of the third and another pair in the fifth, and Roosevelt's hitting struggles continued with just three knocks to the Lakers' credit in the game.

After Judson scored runs in the first and third frames of the second affair, Sterkowitz inflicted two-out damage on a two-bagger that brought in two runs to knot the contest in the top of the fifth.

The game stayed deadlocked at 2-2 with Janssen keeping the Lakers in the game and evading potential issues caused by six free passes.

Janssen's seventh base on balls eventually came back to haunt her and the Lakers. A leadoff walk to Mary Emington in the bottom of the seventh set up the next hitter, Skye Osborne, to hit Janssen's first offering for a double to bring in the winning run, the only earned tally allowed by the Roosevelt rookie.

The Lakers host Olivet Nazarene this Saturday, March 25 at The Ballpark at Rosemont beginning at 5 p.m.
