Women's Basketball Scores 20 In OT To Defeat Bethel (Ind.), 87-78

CHICAGO – The Roosevelt women's basketball team needed overtime on Saturday to knock off non-conference opponent Bethel (Ind.), 87-78, to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Junior guard Emily Duckhorn was a huge catalyst for the Lakers, as she scored 20 points off the bench and buried 6-of-10 from long range. She scored six points in overtime, connecting on two threes during an 8-2 run to open the extra session, in helping Roosevelt secure the victory.

In a game that really wasn't close for three quarters, the Lakers needed the work of Duckhorn and senior guard Paige Gallimore down the stretch to seal the win.

Entering the fourth Roosevelt led by 13 (53-40), but the Pilots battled back in the fourth and outscored the Lakers 27-14.

Gallimore ended the night with 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Lindzy Cox had her second straight big game for the Lakers. She scored 17 and dished out a team best six assists.

"I'm proud of our fight in overtime," head coach Keisha Newell said after the win. "We got outplayed in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter and started playing 'not to lose' instead of putting the game away.

"Paige and Becca being in foul trouble really forced Ashley [Smoldt] and Lindzy to step up and I thought they did a great job," Newell said. "Lindzy Cox has had two big games in a row and we need that from her every game.

"I'm so proud of Emily Duckhorn," Newell said of the junior guard after her big game. "She worked so hard in the offseason and is a true testament of trusting the process. I'm excited to see her continue to excel."

Newell also gave fair dues to the team's senior standout in Gallimore after another team-leading afternoon.

"Paige is playing at an elite level and making the right decisions when teams game plan for her," Newell said.

"It was a true team effort. I'm impressed with how we stuck together and got It done."

Bethel (1-4) was led by freshman forward Jessica Erwin and senior guard Kamala Green, as the duo scored 57 of the team's 78 points. Erwin scored 30 on 11-of-17 shooting and Glenn poured in 27.

Roosevelt returns to the Goodman Center on Wednesday night to take on fifth-ranked St. Francis (Ill.) to open CCAC play. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
