WHITING, Ind. – The Roosevelt volleyball team continued its recent winning ways at the 2017 Crimson Wave Invitational hosted at Calumet St. Joseph's Rittenmeyer Center on Friday and Saturday, taking three of four matches at the event.
Roosevelt rebounded from a five-set loss to Michigan-Dearborn (25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 26-24, 15-10) by sweeping Indiana Northwest (25-23, 25-19, 25-20), defeating Governors State in four (25-12, 25-10, 23-25, 25-13) and sweeping Calumet St. Joseph (25-11, 25-20, 25-10) to finish the invite with three consecutive victories and record five wins in six matches since Tuesday.
The Lakers improved to 10-12 overall by the end of play on Saturday.
Abby Petroelje led the Lakers with 31 kills in 12 sets (2.58 kills per set) during the four-match showing.
Mackenzie Bell and Mallory Nickelson each averaged just over four assists per set in 15 frames each, while Madison Dunbar posted 45 digs in 15 sets to lead the Lakers.
Roosevelt nearly had a clean sweep of the matches, holding a 2-1 set lead against Michigan-Dearborn with match point in Friday's fourth set until UMD took advantage of two straight miscues and notched three consecutive points to force a fifth frame that did not go the way of the Green and White.
Despite that tough loss, Roosevelt brushed it off to defeat Indiana Northwest for the second time in three tries this fall shortly after the UMD contest on Friday night.
The Lakers faced Governors State for the second time in a week after the two tangled at the CCAC Crossover in University Park last weekend, and the result was the same as Roosevelt captured a four-set decision.
Capping the invite was a date with the host Crimson Wave, as Roosevelt easily dispatched of CCSJ on the court in a three-set result.
Petroelje had a weekend-best 13 kills against GSU, while rookie Jessica Ratajczak posted 12 kills in the finale.
Roosevelt gets a few days off to recover from a fast-paced week and returns to the Patti Eylar and Charles Gardner Court inside the Lillian and Larry Goodman Center on Thursday, Oct. 19 against CCAC North Division leader Saint Xavier. That match begins at 7 p.m.
