Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Saint Xavier

CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Roosevelt baseball team dropped a home CCAC doubleheader to Saint Xavier at Standard Bank Stadium on Saturday, as the Lakers lost a narrow 5-4 opener before getting blanked by the Cougars, 5-0, in the finale.

The Lakers (17-16, 8-10 CCAC) rallied back from a three-run deficit to draw even in the first game, but the Green and White stranded 14 runners on base and saw a ninth-inning error allow the decisive run for the Cougars (17-18, 9-8 CCAC) to cross the plate.

Roosevelt couldn't muster much against SXU southpaw Matthew McKenzie, who tossed a four-hit shutout against the Lakers in game two.

In the opener, the Lakers trailed 4-1 in the fifth when Colten Trager doubled in a run and Dan Mazurkiewicz hit a clutch two-out, two-run single up the middle to knot the contest.

Roosevelt had its chances to bring in the go-ahead run, putting that tally in scoring position in the sixth and the seventh after Logan Fleener's leadoff double in the sixth and Tyler Ward's seventh-inning grounder that was misplayed and followed by Andrew Bohlmann's sacrifice bunt. But both were left stranded, among many Lakers during the affair.

Reliever Terry Moran induced a ground ball to second baseman Matt Kozlak with two out and a runner on second in the top of the ninth, but the ball got through Kozlak's glove and into the outfield to allow the eventual winning run to score.

The Lakers put the tying run in scoring position after Ward's one-out single and a walk to Bohlmann, but Erik Eggert record two consecutive strikeouts to end the game on a sour note for the hosts.

The second game was all McKenzie, who tossed 63 pitches in an impressive effort against the Lakers' lineup.

The Cougars took the lead in the second with as pair of runs against Matt Dunne and put the game out of reach with a two-run sixth.

Roosevelt and Saint Xavier conclude their three-game set at the Cougars' home field on Sunday.
