SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Roosevelt women's basketball team induced host Indiana South Bend into 25 turnovers, and the Lakers forced a missed game-tying three-point attempt in the final seconds to escape with a 50-47 win over the Titans on Saturday.
Paige Gallimore led all players with 23 points to surpass 1,000 points for her career, and the junior guard pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Lakers (6-2, 4-1 CCAC), who won their third straight game.
Gallimore became the fifth player in Roosevelt women's basketball history to reach 1,000 career points by getting to 1,003 on Saturday. She joins Casey Davis (2,203), Maria Tamburrino (1,512), Erin McCaslin (1,133) and Becky Williford (1,227) as 1,000-point scorers in Laker history.
"Paige reaching the 1,000-point mark eight games into her junior year is pretty remarkable," Roosevelt head coach Keisha Newell said. "She will continue to shine and be one of the best players in our league."
The Titans (5-8, 1-4 CCAC) opened the game firing on all cylinders, shooting 58 percent in the first quarter and ending that period up six.
The Lakers tightened up on defense, forcing IU South Bend to shoot just 25 percent and score just eight points as Roosevelt went into halftime trailing by just one.
With Gallimore spurring the offense and tallying nine points in the third, Roosevelt continued to clamp down on the defensive end and took a two-point lead into the fourth.
Roosevelt went up seven with five and a half minutes to play, but the Titans eventually got to within one with 36 ticks on the clock.
Becca Bergman (11 points) went to the line and sank two free throws to make it a three-point affair, and Indiana South Bend's Lucy Presnal missed a three-point attempt in the final seconds as Taylor Sterkowitz corralled the miss and prevented the Titans from another shot at getting the game into overtime.
"This was a very impressive win," Newell said. "South Bend is a really good team and we know how hard it is to get a league win, let alone a league win on the road.
"We challenged our team at halftime to lock down defensively and they really stepped up," Newell continued. "I am proud of how we executed and paid attention to detail."
Roosevelt hits the road again to take on Wilberforce (Ohio) this Tuesday.
