CHICAGO – The Roosevelt women's basketball team tipped off the 2016-17 season in winning fashion, rallying back late on Paige Gallimore's three-point play with 1:02 left in regulation after the Lakers trailed for most of the game in a 60-58 victory over Michigan-Dearborn at the Goodman Center on Saturday.
Gallimore posted game highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds in a double-double effort for the Lakers (1-0), who also received 12 points from Becca Bergman.
Shaniah Bishop had a strong debut off the bench with eight points and five assists.
The Wolverines (2-3) led for most of the contest thanks to double-digit efforts from Kendall Rose (19 points) and Megan Swick (13 points).
But the Lakers stayed within striking distance throughout despite a 20 percent shooting showing in the second quarter, chipping away at a UM-Dearborn lead that went as high as eight in the third before finally breaking through late on Gallimore's heroics.
The Lakers trailed by five with just over two minutes to go when Gallimore sank a pair of free throws.
Gina Mathews got in on the act with a strong layup while she was fouled, cutting the deficit to one.
That set the stage for another big Gallimore bucket after a defensive stand, as the junior guard went to the cup and made a basket while she was fouled to give the Lakers their first lead since the second quarter.
Jessica Moriarty then stole the ball from Rose in the final seconds to seal the win.
