Haze's Slam, Grzywa's Four-RBI Nightcap Highlight Big Offensive Day In Twinbill Loss At Saint Xavier

CHICAGO – Danny Haze hit a go-ahead sixth-inning grand slam in the opener while Danny Grzywa drove in four in the nightcap, but the Roosevelt baseball team's 15-run day was not enough in a doubleheader loss at Saint Xavier on Saturday.

Roosevelt (6-22, 1-13 CCAC) rallied back from three- and four-run deficits to take a two-run lead late before the Cougars (15-19, 10-4 CCAC) posted a decisive four-run sixth of their own in an 11-9 SXU decision.

In the second game, the Lakers posted a couple of multi-run innings, but Saint Xavier's seven-run second proved to be the undoing of the Green and White as Roosevelt fell 13-6.

Grzywa and Michaell Lally had four-hit days between the two games.

Roosevelt rallied back from the Cougars' three-run first in the opener with a three-run top of the second. Alex Neufeld had a run-scoring single with the bags packed, with an error and a wild pitch accounting for two more runs to tie the game.

Saint Xavier responded with four in its half of the second, but Roosevelt chipped away with one in the fifth before a huge sixth. Byron Skinner drove in a run before the bases became loaded with Lakers once again. This time Haze stepped to the dish and launched a shot to left that left the park and put the Lakers up 9-7.

A couple of errors and a go-ahead two-run double in the bottom of the sixth erased the Lakers' advantage, and Roosevelt only mustered a Grzywa single in the seventh to fall in the first game.

Roosevelt out-hit Saint Xavier on its home field by a 15-11 margin.

The Lakers continued their hit parade in game two with 11 base knocks, but the Cougars had seven of their 18 hits aid a seven-run second that proved decisive despite Grzywa's two two-run hits .

Roosevelt and Saint Xavier resume the series on Sunday at Standard Bank Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
