Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Trinity Christian

CRESTWOOD, Ill. - Tuesday marked Opening Day 2014 at Standard Bank Stadium for the Roosevelt baseball team, but the Lakers couldn't take advantage of being back at their version of friendly confines as Trinity Christian held on for a pair of victories.

Roosevelt fell 7-4 in game one before rallying from a late nine-run deficit but falling short in the finale, 10-6.

The Lakers move to 4-12 overall and 1-4 in CCAC play, while the Trolls are now 9-9 overall and 4-1 in league action.

Nathan Greene had a pair of two-hit games to go with three runs scored and three RBI, while Mike Czarnik had three total hits and a two-hit, four-RBI finale. AJ Neufeld also had a two-hit, two-RBI performance in the opener.

The Trolls took a 4-0 lead in game one before Roosevelt scored twice in the bottom of the fifth on Greene and Neufeld RBI hits, but Trinity Christian put up three in the top of the seventh to negate Roosevelt's two-run bottom of that same frame.

Roosevelt took an early lead in the nightcap on a Czarnik RBI single in the bottom of the first, but Trinity Christian scored twice in the next half-inning and tacked on solo runs in the third and fourth before back-breaking three-run sixth and eighth innings put the guests up by nine.

The Lakers wouldn't lay down, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth on Czarnik's bases-loaded triple. Roosevelt threatened in the ninth and scored twice on Greene's single up the middle, but reliever Brad Kopale escaped the jam to retire three in a row after that big blow to squash the RU 9's comeback attempt.

Roosevelt plays a makeup twinbill at Purdue North Central in Westville, Ind. on Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m.
