Crestwood, Ill. - The Roosevelt baseball team dropped its first two home games of the season as No. 20 Judson swept an afternoon doubleheader from the Lakers on Saturday at Standard Bank Stadium. The Eagles took the opener, 6-3, and then claimed the nightcap by a 12-0 margin.
Roosevelt, which fell to 5-21 overall and 4-10 in CCAC play, entered the day 2-0 at its new home facility after sweeping a doubleheader last Saturday versus Robert Morris. With the series sweep, Judson remained on top of the CCAC North Division at 15-3, while moving to 29-8 overall this season.
In game one Judson right-hander T.J. Swank collected his seventh win of the season on the mound as the Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for a 6-3 victory.
Swank, now 7-1 on the year, did allow nine hits, but minimized the damage, surrendering just three runs, two earned, in six innings of work. Jordan Pemble worked a scoreless seventh for his seventh save of the year.
Freshman
Chris Jennings (1-4) was the losing pitcher for the Lakers, giving up five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
Already up 2-0 after two innings, the Eagles tacked on three more in the third on a solo home run by Cameron Balough and a two-run single by Craig Lipp. Roosevelt broke through off of Swank in the fifth with senior
Nick Calhoun, who went 3-for-4 on the day, driving home a run with a single.
The Lakers added two more in the sixth. Senior
Tim Storrs (3-for-3) singled with two outs to drive home a run with another runner crossing the plate after the Judson centerfielder misplayed Storrs' hit.
Matt McHenry put the Eagles back up by a three-run margin with an RBI double off reliever
Ryan O'Connor in the seventh. McHenry was 4-for-4 at the plate with four singles.
In game two Judson flexed its offensive muscle, scoring in every inning but one and pounding out 16 hits in a 12-0 victory. Tony Rallo led the Eagles at the plate, going 5-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Judson pitcher Andrew Bergman kept the Roosevelt bats silent as he tossed a complete-game shutout for the Eagles, allowing just three hits for this third win of the year. Bergman held the Lakers hitless into the sixth before a one-out single by
Steve Schwartz broke up the no-hit bid.
Sophomore pitcher
T.J. Davis was tagged with the loss for Roosevelt, falling to 1-2 this season.
The Lakers will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to South Bend, Ind., to take on Holy Cross in an afternoon doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
