Baseball Continues Winning Ways, Sweeping Doubleheader Versus Calumet-St. Joseph

Crestwood, Ill. - The Roosevelt baseball team moved to 5-1 in its last six games with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Calumet-St. Joseph on Wednesday afternoon at Standard Bank Stadium. The Lakers took the opener by an 8-3 margin and then edged the Crimson Wave, 2-1, in the finale.

Roosevelt is now 11-27 overall on the year and 10-16 in the CCAC. The 11 wins surpassed last year's total of nine wins posted by the Lakers in their inaugural season. Calumet-St. Joseph fell to 6-39 overall on the season and 3-24 in league play.
Senior Tony Valdes paced Roosevelt to victory in game one with a pair of hits, including a two-run home run. Freshman pitcher Alex Miramontes then pitched Roosevelt into the win column in game two with a complete-game outing in which he allowed just one run while striking out a career-best eight batters.
Roosevelt tied its season single-game high with eight runs in an 8-3 triumph in game one of the doubleheader. The Lakers scored in every inning but one and pounded out 11 hits in the victory. Seniors Tyler Turner, Valdes and Ernesto Irizarry each had two hits, as did rookie Joe Lyons.
Junior pitcher Carlos Camacho collected his second win of the season, going the distance for the Lakers. He allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out six, while dancing around seven walks issued. Antonio Balcazar suffered the loss, falling to 1-6 this season.
Already owning a 3-0 lead in the third inning, Valdes added to the Lakers' advantage with a towering two-run homer to left field. It was the second home run of the season for Valdes. Roosevelt added a third run in the inning when pinch-runner Brandon Richman scored on a wild pitch, putting the Lakers in front 6-0.
The Crimson Wave broke though against Roosevelt starter Carlos Camacho with a pair of runs on two hits in the third inning. The Lakers tallied a run in the fifth and Calumet-St. Joseph got one back in the sixth. Roosevelt then added an insurance tally in the sixth via a wild pitch for the final 8-3 margin.
In game two, Miramontes allowed just one run and struck out a career-best eight batters in a complete-game effort as the Lakers edged Calumet-St. Joseph, 2-1. It was Miramontes' fourth win of the season, setting a new Roosevelt single-season record for victories by a pitcher.
The Lakers fell behind 1-0 in game two after Coty Majchrazk led off the game with a triple and later scored on a groundout. Crimson Wave starting pitcher Brandon Martin kept Roosevelt off the scoreboard until the third when senior Nick Calhoun drove in freshman Danny Grzywa with a double to right-centerfield.
The Lakers pushed ahead in the fourth inning on a clutch, two-out RBI single by sophomore Milton Childs. Childs' hit proved to be the game-winner and all Roosevelt would need as Miramontes shut the door on the Crimson Wave the rest of the way.
Martin was the losing pitcher of record, falling to 1-5 on the year despite surrendering just two runs on five hits in four innings.
The Lakers will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on IIT in a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
