Groveland, Fla. - The Roosevelt baseball team opened play at the 2012 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Monday night with a 15-2 loss to Concordia (Neb.) at South Lake High School.
The Bulldogs (8-9) jumped on Lakers starter
Alex Miramontes, plating five runs on six hits in the top of the first inning off the freshman. Concordia (Neb.) relied on clutch hitting to carry them the rest of the way, scoring 10 runs over the next eight innings, all of which came with two outs.
The Lakers had chances of their own to get back in the game in the early going, but stranded runners in scoring position in the second, third and fourth innings.
Roosevelt's (0-7) offensive bright spot came in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior
Tony Valdes hit a towering two-run homer to left-centerfield off reliever Jeremiah Luber. Senior
Tyler Turner, who was 3-for-4 at the plate on the day, scored on the blast.
Junior
Carlos Camacho showed plenty of promise for the Lakers out of the bullpen, tossing two scoreless innings with a personal-best five strikeouts. As a team, Roosevelt registered 10 punch outs versus the Bulldogs.
Jordan Stirtz shut down the Lakers for the second straight year, pitching five scoreless innings to pick up the win for Concorda (Neb.). He gave up just one run in eight innings in a winning effort last year. Catcher Ray Finley led the Bulldogs' offense, going 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Miramontes was the losing pitcher for Roosevelt, dropping to 0-3 this season.
The Lakers and Bulldogs will square off, once again, tomorrow morning in a doubleheader starting at 10:00 a.m. at Pat Thomas Stadium.
