Chicago, Ill. – Five players scored in double figures to lead the Roosevelt women's basketball team to an 81-66 win over Clarke in the Lakers' home opener at the UIC Physical Education Building on Saturday.
Maria Tamburrino turned in her second double-double in as many games with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jennie Van Hook joined in on the double-double fun with 10 points and 10 boards of her own.
Erin McCaslin hit four from beyond the arc en route to 14 points. Devin Talley and Kiara Towles came off the bench to pitch in 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
Roosevelt (2-0) used a 16-2 first-half run to take early control of the contest, going up by as many as 20 and taking an 18-point advantage into intermission.
The Lakers shot 14-for-32 in the opening stanza, including 5-for-10 from three-point range. McCaslin was 3-for-5 from downtown in the first 30 minutes, hitting two in a span of 30 seconds at one point late in the period.
Roosevelt balanced hot long-range shooting with a first-half defense that held Clarke (0-2) to just 26.5 percent (9-of-34) from the floor.
The second half was a bit closer, as the Crusaders would cut a 23-point deficit down to 12 with 2:15 remaining thanks to improved Clark shooting (13-for-29) and a Roosevelt dry spell.
But the Lakers held on, as a Tamburrino three off of a pass from rookie Becky Williford with just under two minutes left squashed any hope of a Crusader comeback.
"It was a strong start for us, and I was extremely happy with how we played in the first half," said head coach Robyn Scherr-Wells. "I thought we could have played much stronger in the second half.
"Maria and Jennie were fantastic and played great on both ends of the court, and Erin hit of a couple of shot that were difference-makers."
The Lakers return to the UIC Physical Education Building on Wednesday, Nov. 7 to host Saint Francis in a doubleheader with the Roosevelt men's team. Tip-off for the women's contest is 5:30 p.m.
