Pitching Dominates As Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Calumet College Of St. Joseph

Gary, Ind. - Pitching ruled the day in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon between the Roosevelt baseball team and Calumet College of St. Joseph with the two teams splitting the twin-bill. Nick Szynal tossed a complete-game shutout in the opener as the Lakers won 1-0. Crimson Wave hurler Tim Williams answered in the nightcap, as he took a no-hitter into the seventh in a 4-0 triumph.

Roosevelt collected its first-ever conference victory in the opener and ended the day with an overall record of 4-9, 1-4 in the CCAC. Calumet College of St. Joseph, meanwhile, is now 4-19 this season with a 1-5 league ledger.

In game one, junior Szynal (1-4) collected his first win this year on the mound, tossing a complete-game, three-hit shutout with four strikeouts.

The Lakers tallied their lone run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by Dave Plocharczyk. Plocharczyk was 2-for-3 at the plate on the day and almost drove in a run in the third, but junior Tim Storrs was thrown out trying to score on the hit.

CCSJ tried to mount a rally in the seventh, but Szynal closed the door on the comeback attempt, getting Ramone Griffith to ground out to second base to end the game with the tying run at third base.

The pitching dominance continued in game two of the doubleheader, only this time it was Crimson Wave starter Tim Williams who was baffling the hitters in a 4-0 CCSJ triumph. Williams took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, only to have it broken up when Plocharczyk doubled.

Plocharczyk's two-bagger put runners on the corners for the Lakers in the final frame and brought the tying run to the plate with only one out. Williams got out of the jam, though, as he got Joey Malia to fly out to center and then Storrs, who had reached on an error to open the inning, was thrown out at the plate trying to tag up.

Freshman Ruben Lomeli pitched well for the Lakers in a starting effort, but was tagged with the loss despite surrendering just three earned runs on four hits. Lomeli gave up single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth inning and is now 1-1 on the year.

Roosevelt will turn right around and get back on the diamond on Monday afternoon with a single 7-inning game at Saint Xavier at 4:00 p.m.
