KENOSHA, Wis. – A red card late in the first half proved to be the difference as Roosevelt fell 5-0 to Parkside on Friday in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener in Kenosha. Wis.
It was a tough first half for the Lakers (0-3-2, 0-1-0 GLIAC) as the Rangers outshot them 17-1, but it was still just 1-0 at the intermission. Kaylee Sarnicola made 10 stops in the first half to keep the deficit at one after Parkside scored less than seven minutes into the game. However, after Roosevelt was reduced to 10 players with the red card in the 43rd minute, Parkside took more control.
Sarnicola made one more save in the second half to finish with a career-best 11 stops in the game, but it was an uphill battle over the final 45 minutes. The Rangers scored four times on 13 total shot attempts in the second half, and the Lakers managed just two shots in the half, including a Kyra Cruickshank shot on target.
The best news of the day for the Lakers was the three players who returned from injuries to appear in the match. Kenna Wisniewski was back after missing three games and played 11 minutes, and two Lakers made their season debuts. Celine Blömer played 32 minutes off the bench and Ellie Bielenda played the final 11 minutes of the game for Roosevelt.
