Defense Powers Lakers Against Jamestown

CHICAGO – Roosevelt moved one step closer to securing postseason play with a four-set win over Jamestown on Friday night in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at the Goodman Center.

The Lakers got the victory with a stifling defense that smothered the Jimmies for much of the match. Three different Roosevelt players ended up with at least 10 digs and the Lakers (15-8, 7-4 GLVC) ended up with 12 total blocks, the most in the program's NCAA era. Four different players finished with at least three blocks, led by five from Ashton Stage.

Jamestown put some early pressure on Roosevelt by taking an early 13-10 lead in the opening set on the back of consecutive aces. The Lakers eventually tied the set at 16, but the Jimmies threatened to take the first set with consecutive kills to break a 19-19 deadlock.

Roosevelt called timeout at 21-19 and after the teams traded service errors, Jonathan Stovring took control of the set. He tied the set with consecutive kills then teamed up with Andre Cippiciani to stuff the Jimmies at the net. The junior finished with four kills and two blocks in the first set as the Lakers won the final five points to claim the opening set 25-22.

There was less pushback in the second set as the Lakers cruised to a 25-18 win over the Jimmies. Stovring added three more kills and Mark Zmojdzin also registered three kills as Roosevelt pulled away with an 8-2 run to open up a 17-11 lead. Kajetan Bieniek also served up two of his four aces in the second set to help the Lakers at the service line.

A blended lineup in the third set gave some Lakers valuable in-game experience, but Jamestown took the set 25-21 to force a fourth game. Roosevelt did not mess around in the fourth set by taking control early after winning nine of the first 11 points. Stage served up two aces in that run and Keawe Ayau had a pair of kills as well. The Lakers would eventually end the match with a comfortable 25-16 win in the fourth set.

Bieniek led the Lakers offense with 12 kills and also tallied a team-best 13 digs to go along with his four aces and four blocks. Stovring finished on nine kills and three blocks while Cippiciani added 10 digs and three blocks. Simone Mondin had 11 digs as well for the Lakers to aid in the defensive effort.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will try to clinch a berth in the conference tournament on Saturday with a win against Jamestown on Senior Day. Prior to the 2 p.m. match, the Lakers will honor Mark Zmojdzin as the team's lone senior.
