CALEDONIA, Mich. – Roosevelt's first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series of the season ended in heartbreak Sunday as Davenport walked off the Lakers 7-6 in 10 innings.
The Lakers began the extra frame with consecutive outs, but Ian Bagaconza sparked a two-out rally with a single through the right side. CJ Chalk sent a single into left field then Maxwell Bowers walked to load the bases for Alejandro Munoz. The junior delivered with a single up the middle that scored two runs and gave Roosevelt (7-15, 0-4 GLIAC) some breathing room.
However, after the Panthers' first batter of the bottom of the 10th flew out to left field, Davenport secured three hits around a hit batter to score three runs for the sweep. Roosevelt's pitching staff did surrender 17 hits in the game, but stranded nine runners on base. That total does not include the four inning-ending double plays the Lakers induced as well as the one runner picked off and the one caught stealing.
Roosevelt struck first in the second inning after Bowers led off the inning with a single. Munoz walked then both runners stole a base to put themselves in position for Kyle Jannenga to plate a run on a groundout. The Lakers doubled the lead in the fourth with once again Bowers starting off the frame with a single before stealing second base and eventually scoring on a passed ball.
Davenport tied the game in the bottom of the fourth then took its first lead of the day in the fifth. The Panthers added on one more run in the sixth to make it 4-2 before the Lakers came back in the seventh. Tyler Ruete singled then Jannenga walked to put two runners on base, and a wild pitch advanced both 90 feet into scoring position. Quinn O'Bryan drove in the first run with a groundout before Andrew Lucas followed with an infield single that plated the tying run.
Bagaconza finished 3 for 5 with a run scored while Bowers and Lucas both also ended with multiple hits in the game. The Lakers finished with 11 hits in the game, which was the number of hits Roosevelt had in Saturday's doubleheader combined.
