Zmojdzin Powers Lakers Past Bearcats

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Mark Zmojdzin tied the Roosevelt record for kills in a match to lead the Lakers to a four-set Great Lakes Valley Conference win over Southwest Baptist on Friday evening.

The senior finished with 24 kills, becoming the fourth different Roosevelt attacker to hit that mark in the past three seasons to share the record. After the Bearcats took the first set 25-22, Zmojdzin heated up with nine kills to lead Roosevelt (10-5, 2-1 GLVC) to a 25-15 rout in the second set. He added seven more kills in the third set to help the Lakers eke out a 25-23 win before Roosevelt won the fourth set 25-19 with the rest of the team taking control. He finished hitting .378 for the match.

Roosevelt and Southwest Baptist went back and forth in the opening set with the game tied 11 times and five lead changes. The difference in the first set was at the service line where the Lakers had six errors while the Bearcats had just two. Otherwise, the Lakers offense overwhelmed the Bearcats with 16 kills, five from Zmojdzin and four each from Simone Augugliaro and Kajetan Bieniek.

There was no mistaking the better team in the second set as Roosevelt went on a 4-0 run after splitting the first four points and never looked back. The Lakers held the Bearcats to just four kills while they smacked down 15 of their own. Simone Mondin had six of his team-best 17 digs in the second set as Roosevelt won eight of the final 10 points in the set.

The third set was tied 13 times and the lead changed hands eight times as neither team led by more than one until the middle of the set. A Southwest Baptist service error at 11-11 started a 4-0 run that included two aces from Christian Reddaway in his first start of the season as well as a Zmojdzin kill. The Bearcats still clawed back, but a 3-0 run at 21-21 gave the Lakers the space they needed to grab the 2-1 lead.

It was Southwest Baptist's own miscues that gave Roosevelt the separation it needed in the fourth set to claim its second conference victory. The Bearcats gave the Lakers six points on service errors and five more on attack errors, which allowed Roosevelt to build confidence. Augugliaro had five of his 13 kills in the final set and Jonathan Stovring added three kills as well for the Lakers.

Stovring finished with seven kills and two blocks while Augugliaro complemented his 13 kills with three aces and 11 digs. Reddaway served up his two aces and was also part of three Roosevelt blocks along with Zmojdzin. Martino Bertagnoli dished out 45 helpers to go along with five kills and six digs.
