Historic Offense Fuels Lakers In Sweep

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Roosevelt put together its best offensive performance in program history to easily sweep Southwest Baptist in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Saturday in Missouri.

The Lakers (11-5, 3-1 GLVC) had a program-low six errors and hit a program-best .514 to blow past the Bearcats. Roosevelt hit .619 in the opening set en route to a 25-12 blowout then took the second and third sets by matching 25-19 scorelines while also hitting above .460 in both games.

Southwest Baptist had no answer for Roosevelt in the first set after the Lakers won the first four points and six of the first seven. Kajetan Bieniek and Simone Augugliaro bookended the 4-0 run with kills as both were perfect in the opening set. Augugliaro had six kills on six attempts while Bieniek was 5 for 5 as Roosevelt registered 14 kills to just one error in the first set.

The second set started out even better for the Lakers after they claimed the first five points courtesy of a pair of Augugliaro aces as well as kills from Bieniek and Mark Zmojdzin. The Bearcats clawed back to within two, but Augugliaro had yet another kill to kick off a 4-0 rally that put the set away. Both Augugliaro and Zmojdzin had four kills in the set to lead the way.

In the third set, the teams split the first eight points before Roosevelt pulled away for good with yet another 4-0 run. The Lakers stretched their lead to as many as eight points in the third set behind a resurgent Zmojdzin, who had six of his 12 kills in the final set. Bieniek added four kills as well to finish with 11 on 13 swings for a program-record .846 hitting percentage.

Augugliaro served up four of Roosevelt's nine aces while also finishing in double figures with 10 kills. Martino Bertagnoli dished out 18 assists in two sets of action before Adrian Gajewski had 13 in the final set. Simone Mondin again led the defensive efforts with 10 digs and also added five helpers.

UP NEXT: The Lakers return home Friday for a weekend series with Thomas More at the Goodman Center.
