CHICAGO – Brynne Katcher broke a tie with 2:22 left in regulation to push Roosevelt to a 59-53 win over Parkside on Thursday night in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Goodman Center.
The tone of the contest was set in the opening minutes when neither team was able to score. It took nearly three and a half minutes before Kelly Boyle's jump shot put the first points on the scoreboard and the Rangers led 20-15 at halftime. The back-and-forth nature of the game continued for all 40 minutes as the Lakers and Rangers scratched and clawed for every point.
Roosevelt (6-14, 5-8 GLIAC) took over the game for good in the final 2:30 when Aubrey Leonard fought her way to the foul line. She split her two attempts, but managed to corral the rebound and find Katcher open on the wing for a 3-pointer. It was one of just two triples the Lakers made in the game, and Katcher finished with nine points and nine rebounds with seven of those points coming in the fourth quarter.
Leonard also added a big play of her own with 44 seconds left, splitting the Parkside defense for a layup through contact to extend the Roosevelt lead back to four. The freshman scored five points and grabbed five rebounds in the game, but played most of the fourth quarter and continued to excel on defense as well.
The Lakers' offensive turnaround in the second half was keyed by the duo of Boyle and Marie Outlay and their ability to find their spots. In Boyle's case, she settled into her mid-range jump shots and finished with 12 of her 16 points in the second half. Outlay attacked the rim and made 4 of 6 in the second half to score 15 points over the final 20 minutes and finish on 21 points.
Outlay also grabbed 10 rebounds, securing the double-double by outhustling the Rangers to a missed free throw with 11 seconds left. The junior made 5 of 6 from the foul line in the final 22 seconds of regulation to help keep the Lakers ahead and help them pull away.
Isabella Pitta added 11 rebounds as well for the Lakers, which won the battle on the glass 46-31. Roosevelt scored 16 second-chance points off 17 offensive rebounds and outscored Parkside 22-20 in the paint.
UP NEXT: The Lakers will enjoy a rare Saturday off before facing No. 18 Ferris State on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Goodman Center.
