PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Simone Augugliaro had 12 kills and hit .455 in the match to lead Roosevelt to a confident sweep of Trinity Christian on Saturday night.
The Lakers easily dispatched of the Trolls 25-23, 25-14, 25-17 in their final non-conference match of the season by hitting .258 as a team. In addition to Augugliaro's offense, Roosevelt (8-4) was aided by Kajetan Bieniek's 10 kills, Adrian Gajewski's 22 assists and 14 digs from Yeban Youn. Braxton McGonigle finished with four blocks and Christian Reddaway had three stuffs as both players appeared in all three sets.
Roosevelt went on a 5-0 run to break a 9-9 deadlock in the first set courtesy of a pair of Augugliaro kills and an ace from Martino Bertagnoli. Bieniek added a kill to make it 22-14 in favor of the Lakers before some self-inflicted mistakes allowed the Trolls to close the gap to 24-23. Andre Cippiciani eventually finished the set with an ace, but did not on the fourth chance the Lakers had to close out the game.
There was no need to worry about Roosevelt in the second set as it raced out to early leads and held on with ease. The Lakers forced a Trinity Christian timeout by winning 10 of the first 13 points in the second set. The Trolls never got closer than six the rest of the set with Augugliaro having an eight-point stretch with three kills and two aces to open up a 20-8 advantage.
Trinity Christian had a bit more fight in the third set, but never managed to tie the score after Roosevelt scored the first two points. The Trolls committed three attack errors and a service error during a 5-1 Lakers run that gave Roosevelt the separation it needed to close out the match. Fittingly, it was Augugliaro who finished off the match with a kill as he made just two attack errors in the entire match.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt has nearly two weeks off to prepare for its first foray through the Great Lakes Valley Conference, which begins March 6 at 6 p.m. at the Goodman Center against Missouri S&T.
