Roosevelt Battles Missouri S&T In GLVC Opener

CHICAGO – Roosevelt showed plenty of fight in a 3-0 loss to open Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday night at the Goodman Center against Missouri S&T.

The Lakers and Miners were in a true battle in the first two sets with neither side giving up an inch to start the inaugural GLVC conference season. The first set was tied 15 times and the lead changed hands six times before Missouri S&T emerged with a 25-19 victory after claiming the final six points. Neither team had a lead of larger than three until the very end with Simone Augugliaro leading the charge for Roosevelt with four kills in the set.

There were only nine ties and one lead change in the second set, but Roosevelt (8-5, 0-1 GLVC) thwarted two set points before falling 26-24. The Lakers scored four of the first five points to take control of the set and did not trail until the Miners took a 19-18 lead. Mark Zmojdzin fired off six kills in the set and Augugliaro joined Kajetan Bieniek with five kills each as Roosevelt hit .436 in the second set.

It looked like the third set was going to follow a similar pattern with five ties and a pair of lead changes early. However, the Miners went on an 8-0 run after the Lakers led 9-7 and never relented in taking the final set 25-15.

Zmojdzin led the Lakers with 11 kills and Augugliaro finished on nine after being held without a kill in the third set. Bieniek and Jonathan Stovring both added six kills with Martino Bertagnoli orchestrating the offense with 29 assists and six digs. Augugliaro also dug six balls and Simone Mondin had five digs and 14 receptions off serves.

UP NEXT: The two teams will play again Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Goodman Center for the second match of the weekend set.
