Roosevelt Falls Short Against Wayne State

CHICAGO – Roosevelt could not keep up with Wayne State's firepower in a 94-73 loss to the Warriors on Thursday night in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Goodman Center.

The Lakers put five scorers in double figures, but every time they went on a run, Wayne State managed to be able to respond. Roosevelt's typically stout defense was left in awe as the Warriors made contested shot after contested shot on a 24-2 run that spanned both halves and was the difference in the game.

There were several times in the first half when it felt like Wayne State was poised to have its big quarter and break away. However, Roosevelt (7-17, 6-11 GLIAC) was able to find an answer, and it usually started with its defense. The Lakers nearly erased a 10-point first-quarter deficit in the final three minutes, trimming it down to four.

Aubrey Leonard was the key to the entire turnaround in the first half, sparking Roosevelt with her tenacious defense and willingness to get into passing lanes. The freshman scored nine points and registered three steals in the first half, almost singlehandedly dragging Roosevelt back into the game. In an 18-second span, she made a contested layup and assisted on a Kelly Boyle 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one.

Emma Yurich made a layup with 3:40 left in the half to put the Lakers up a point, but the Warriors scored the final 12 points of the first half. Roosevelt then didn't make a field goal for nearly eight minutes in the third quarter as the lead ballooned to as many as 22 before Isabel Lindo's 3-pointer. Despite the 3 for 14 shooting, the Lakers still scored 19 points in the third quarter courtesy of going 12 of 13 from the foul line in the period.

Lindo and Isabella Pitta tied for the team lead with 15 points, though Pitta added 11 rebounds for yet another double-double this season. Boyle finished on 13 points while Leonard and Marie Outlay had 11 points each. Outlay added six steals and three blocks as well as a team high four assists, meanwhile Leonard added five rebounds and four thefts to her totals.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will host Purdue Northwest on Saturday at 1 p.m. for its final home game of the season at the Goodman Center. With a victory, the Lakers would clinch a berth in the GLIAC Tournament for a second consecutive year.
