JOLIET, Ill – Jack Hoh drove in four runs to help Roosevelt open its season with a 9-3 win over St. Francis (Ill.) in Joliet.
The senior went 2 for 3 at the plate in the season opener with both hits going for extra bases. Hoh doubled in a run in the third inning then brought home two runs in the fifth with another double. The Frankfort, Ill. native drove in another run in the sixth on a long sacrifice fly in foul territory of right field.
A leadoff double came around to score for the Fighting Saints in the opening inning, but the Lakers (1-0) were in total control after that. Tyler Ruete led off the second with a walk then came around to tie the game on Kyle Jannenga's single up the middle. Andrew Lucas began the third inning with a walk then stole second to put himself in position to score on Alejandro Munoz's single. Hoh followed with his first double to plate Munoz for the 3-1 lead.
Roosevelt was back at it in the fifth inning with a leadoff double from C.J. Chalk and another single by Munoz. That set the table for Hoh to blast a double into the gap in left centerfield for two more runs. Chalk drove in the Lakers' sixth run in the sixth inning with a single and Munoz drew a bases-loaded walk two batters later. Chalk scored on a wild pitch with Hoh at the dish before the senior's sacrifice fly to make it 9-1.
Munoz also finished 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored and a pair of RBI in addition to working two walks. Chalk was the only other Lakers batter with multiple hits while batting 2 for 5 at the leadoff spot.
The Lakers used six pitchers in their opener, showcasing the pitching depth with four more games left this weekend. Kaden Foran threw the first two innings and allowed three hits and just the one run with a strikeout. Aramis Salmeron officially earned the win with two scoreless innings while Jason Kosloski and Payton Kaiser combined to allow just two hits over the next three innings. Antwan Harvey Jr. pitched a perfect ninth after St. Francis scored twice in the eighth inning off Anthony Tardif.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt heads south to face Quincy for a four-game set this weekend. The Lakers and Hawks will play back-to-back doubleheaders Friday and Saturday with both twinbills starting at noon.
