ALLENDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt had no answer for No. 19 Grand Valley State's second-half surge in an 81-52 loss to the ranked Lakers on Thursday in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The battle of the Lakers was exactly that for the first 20 minutes with the lead changing hands five times and neither side able to lead by more than eight. Roosevelt (4-18, 3-12 GLIAC) held Grand Valley State below 32 percent shooting in the first half and limited the hosts to four second-chance points off 11 offensive rebounds. On the other side, Hamahrie Bowers scored 14 points, including a buzzer-beating turnaround at the end of the half to bring the visitors within three at the break.
Bowers hit a 3-pointer early in the second half to trim the deficit to 37-35, but Grand Valley State responded with a 15-0 run to blow open the game. The junior added eight second-half points to his total to finish with 22 total points, but Roosevelt shot just 2 of 13 from long range as Grand Valley State pulled away.
Mikey West scored 13 points to join Bowers in double figures, and the pair combined for six of Roosevelt's seven made 3-pointers. Bowers also grabbed a team-high five rebounds as Roosevelt lost the battle on the glass 52-29.
UP NEXT: The Lakers will try to return to their winning ways Saturday at 2 p.m. against Davenport on the road.
