CALEDONIA, Mich. – Noah Vasilev scored his first goal of the season to lift Roosevelt to a 1-0 win over Davenport in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Sunday in Michigan.
The senior from Germany connected with countryman Fynn Mewes to finish off a hard-nosed effort by Roosevelt on the forecheck. The sequence began with Rafael Rios racing up the right wing then twice winning the ball back deep in Davenport territory after momentarily losing possession. The second time Rios won the ball, he poked it to Mewes who barreled in on goal before dishing to Vasilev for the shot.
The Lakers (5-1-4, 3-1-2 GLIAC) dominated the first half of the match, but could not convert in the opening 45 minutes despite more than 60 percent of the possession. Roosevelt held a 9-2 edge in shot attempts in the first half, but just two of those nine hit the target. The second half was closer statistically as the Lakers only outshot the Panthers 3-2, but Davenport didn't threaten Cedrik Strupler much.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt returns home for its final two regular-season dates at Morris Field. The Lakers host Davenport for a rematch Friday at 1 p.m. before hosting Saginaw Valley State for Senior Day on Sunday at noon. Â
