Men's Soccer Completes Home-and-Home Sweep of Davenport, Moving Into Tie Atop GLIAC Standings

Box Score Chicago, Ill. – Five days removed from a narrow victory at Davenport, the Roosevelt men's soccer team completed a home-and-home GLIAC series sweep of the Panthers with a 2-0 triumph on Friday afternoon at Morris Field.

Sophomore Matthew Goulding netted his first goal of the season off a set piece in the 25th minute to put the Lakers in front. Senior Fynn Mewes then all but secured the three points in the 77th minute with his team-leading seventh goal.

The win vaulted the Lakers into a three-way tie atop the GLIAC table. Roosevelt joins Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley State at 14 points on identical 4-1-2 league records. The Lakers, who are 6-1-4 overall, take on Saginaw Valley State on Sunday at Morris Field at 12pm in a pivotal GLIAC contest.

Roosevelt carried the momentum from Sunday's win at Davenport into Friday's tilt, controlling possession and pace in the opening half.

After being denied by keeper Carter McGown on three early chances, the Lakers broke through in the 25th minute, capitalizing on a free kick from a dangerous position 25 yards out from goal. Mewes served the free kick in to the box where it found the head of senior Noah Vasilev wide of the far post. He deftly redirected the ball to the center of goal and the awaiting head of Goulding, who finished the pass to stake the Lakers to an early lead.

Roosevelt remained on the front foot and eventually found its second goal in the 77th minute when junior Rafael Rios played Mewes into space on the right side of the box. The reigning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year showcased his skill with two quick touches to create space from his defender before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal.

The Lakers finished the contest with 14 shots on target with McGowan tallying 11 saves in defeat. Davenport, meanwhile, only put one of its seven shots on goal.

The victory improved Roosevelt's home unbeaten streak to 21 matches. The Lakers will close out the regular season portion of their home schedule on Sunday versus Saginaw Valley State at 12pm. Roosevelt will honor its seniors in a special ceremony prior to warm ups for the contest.
