MARQUETTE, Mich. – Roosevelt lost consecutive matches for the first time in two years after falling 2-1 Sunday afternoon to Northern Michigan in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup in the Upper Peninsula.
The Wildcats struck first in the 33rd minute, capitalizing on an interception in the midfield and scoring on the counter. However, it took the Lakers less than two minutes to respond as Fynn Mewes collected a loose ball off a 50-50 header and powerfully sent the ball into the far corner. It was the German's eighth goal of the season.
However, Northern Michigan scored again in the 58th minute and this time Roosevelt (6-3-5, 4-3-3 GLIAC) didn't have an answer. The Lakers forced five saves out of the Northern Michigan goalkeeper, outshooting the Wildcats 12-8 overall and 6-3 on target. Mewes had two of those six shots on goal and Tim Koczulap had two as well for Roosevelt.
Despite Sunday's result, the Lakers secured a top-five finish in the GLIAC and a spot in the conference tournament following Friday's results. Roosevelt is eliminated from winning the league and would need to win out and have Northern Michigan lose its final two games in order to secure the No. 2 seed.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt can secure a home quarterfinals match Friday when it visits Parkside at 1 p.m. in Wisconsin. If the Lakers win, they could finish no worse than fourth overall, and they would secure the No. 3 seed with a win and a Purdue Northwest tie or loss Friday.
