ST. CLOUD, Minn. – A late strike sealed Roosevelt's fate in a 2-1 loss to St. Cloud State on Wednesday afternoon in Minnesota.
The Lakers began the day tied atop the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, but could not generate much offense against the resilient Huskies. Roosevelt (6-2-5, 4-2-3 GLIAC) managed just seven shot attempts in the match, putting three on goal while limiting St. Cloud State to just five shots on frame in the match.
The hosts took the lead 16 minutes into the game, only for Roosevelt to even the match in the 40th minute. Andrea Mercanti's corner kick was deflected onto Fynn Mewes' right foot and the forward hammered a shot that deflected off Matti Pickel and into the goal to tie the game.
However, St. Cloud State stunned the Lakers with an 86th-minute goal to steal all three points. Alexsander Panduro and Noah Vasilev had Roosevelt's other two shots on target in the match while Cedrik Strupler made three saves in the setback.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt will rest and prepare for Sunday's 2:00 p.m. kickoff at Northern Michigan, which was receiving votes in the latest coaches poll.
