UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – Marie Outlay's destiny was realized Saturday in University Center, Mich.
It took just 34 seconds for the junior from Sun Prairie, Wis. to tie the Roosevelt career steals record. Almost five minutes later, the record was officially hers alone, but she didn't stop at the career record Saturday.
Outlay set a new single-game program record with 11 steals in an eventual 59-50 loss to Saginaw Valley State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. She now holds every major steals record in the Roosevelt record book by herself after setting the single-season marks in both of her first two years. She's now just nine steals away from breaking her own season record again with eight games still guaranteed for the Lakers.
There wasn't much Outlay wasn't doing in the game as she also led the Lakers with eight rebounds and tied for the team lead with 13 points. She played all 40 minutes and made 5 of 9 from the field and she even added a late block to maintain her lead in that category for the Lakers.
Roosevelt fell behind 10-2 early in the game but managed to claw its way back to within four at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers, though, got cold in the second quarter and were outscored 21-5 to put themselves in a large hole. Alas, there was no second-half comeback in the cards despite the Lakers holding the Cardinals to 28 percent shooting in the second half.
UP NEXT: The Lakers return home for their next two games, starting Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Parkside.
