SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Roosevelt's poise and calmness at the free throw line were the difference in a 75-68 win over Lake Superior State on Thursday evening in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup did not feature pretty offense, but the Lakers were gritty and stayed aggressive to pull away in the fourth quarter. Lake Superior State broke a halftime deadlock to lead by six points after three quarters as Roosevelt's struggles on offense took center stage. The Lakers (4-14, 4-7 GLIAC) kept themselves in the game at the charity stripe with 15 made free throws on 18 attempts over the first 30 minutes.
That only served as the appetizer for Roosevelt's remarkable fourth quarter at the free-throw line. The team set program records for most free throws attempted in a quarter with 25 and smashed the record for made free throws in a quarter with 20 makes. In all, Roosevelt sank 35 free throws in the game, the first time the Lakers made that many since November 2014.
Kelly Boyle started the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and a layup in the opening minute, and Roosevelt did not make another field goal for nearly seven minutes. By the time Isabella Pitta made a layup with 2:19 left in regulation, the Lakers led by seven points and looked on their way to secure a road conference victory. Between the two baskets, neither team made a field goal as Roosevelt made 15 of 17 from the free throw line while holding Lake Superior State to 0 for 5 shooting from the floor and forcing six turnovers.
No one was better at forcing turnovers and capitalizing on them than Marie Outlay, who tied the school record with nine steals in the contest. The junior led the team with 21 points, 15 of which came at the foul line, and she was a critical part in the Lakers scoring 24 points off Lake Superior State's 22 turnovers. Outlay now sits one steal away from tying the Roosevelt career record for steals with 245 in 70 appearances. Â
Boyle finished with 16 points and six assists while Pitta dominated the second half for 14 points and six rebounds. Isabel Lindo dug out seven rebounds, one fewer than Brynne Katcher's team-high eight, while Aubrey Leonard sank two big 3-pointers in the first half and finished on seven points in the win.
