CHICAGO – Five players finished in double figures for Roosevelt on Saturday, but it was not enough in an 87-69 setback against Grand Valley State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at the Goodman Center.
Although the Lakers never led in the game, they did not let Grand Valley State pull away until the bitter end. Roosevelt trailed by as many as 15 in the first half but were able to claw back to within nine as Hamahrie Bowers scored 12 first-half points to lead the way. The lead was down to five a minute into the second half and dropped to as low as four points roughly five minutes into the period.
Bowers led Roosevelt (2-15, 1-9 GLIAC) with 22 points and eight rebounds while Davon Smith-Johnson chipped in 14 points on the interior. Mason Kleinsmith had a career night, sinking all three of his 3-point attempts en route to a career-best 13 points. Kaleim Taylor and Mikey West both gutted their way to 10 points each with timely 3-pointers and some free-throw shooting.
Taylor dished out seven assists as well, a season-high for a Lakers player, and a big reason Roosevelt hung with Grand Valley State. Although the visitors were receiving votes in this week's poll, the Lakers were able to frustrate Grand Valley State on the perimeter by holding it to 5 of 23 from 3-point range.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt heads to Lake Superior State on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to kick off the second half of its conference slate.
